In-country Researcher Somalia

—

Based in Brussels and active in over a dozen countries, the European Institute of Peace (www.eip.org) is an independent organisation working collaboratively with the parties to the conflict, those who represent people suffering from insecurity or at risk of violence, as well as European decision-makers and the conflict prevention, resolution and mediation community.

We provide practical experience, technical expertise, and policy advice on conflict resolution. We use a variety of tools to help us do this, including analysis, mapping and design of peace processes and agreements, facilitating policy discussions, and proposing practical engagement, for example through inclusive dialogue and mediation support.

Are you captivated by our innovative approach to peace, and do you want to contribute to the mission of our institute? Do you share our vision for a world where people live in safety and peace because conflicts and grievances are resolved through inclusive dialogue and lasting political agreements?

We are looking for an In-country Researcher to support the team’s current projects in Somalia within the Peace Practice and Innovation (PPI) unit.

You will
  • Identify and engage with relevant stakeholders within each government institution and civil society organisation targeted by the team, contributing to creating links to the project and building working relationships.
  • Lead in mapping and conduct background research on civil society organisations active in climate adaptation, conflict prevention, and conflict resolution, and engage selected CSOs actors to develop a joint position on climate security.
  • Support in the facilitation of key project events in Mogadishu, including a civil society forum, and technical and ministerial meetings of ministries with an environment mandate, including providing background research and event material, and reporting on outcomes of events.

Your skills and experience
  • At least 7 years of relevant professional experience working in climate change adaptation and mitigation, climate finance, climate security, and/or environmental governance.
  • At least 5 years of experience working with Somali federal and/or state government institutions with an environment mandate, as well as civil society organisations and international development programmes.
  • Demonstrated experience leading and contributing to applied research, analysis and high-quality reports.
  • Strong communication, organisational and coordinational skills, including meeting logistics and documentation.
  • Fluency in Somali and professional working proficiency in English.
